Shillong, Mar 5: The detailed project report (DPR) for anti-erosion work in Phulbari town, West Garo Hills district, is under preparation, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed the Assembly on Tuesday. The project aims to protect riverbanks from erosion caused by the Brahmaputra and Jingjiram rivers.
Sangma stated that the public works department (roads) has been carrying out periodic repair works to restore eroded sections and damaged embankments affected by the Rongai, Jinjiram, and the Brahmaputra’s backflow during monsoons. Protection measures such as boulder sausage installations, earth-filled jute bags, and palisading have been implemented, with additional works planned.
While no specific timeline was provided due to the involvement of multiple agencies, Sangma assured that efforts are underway to expedite the project’s implementation.
He further informed that the government has recently conducted an assessment of the socio-economic impact of recurring floods on local communities and is working on rebuilding infrastructure, including roads and bridges damaged by floods.
As part of long-term flood mitigation measures, the government is planning initiatives such as floodplain zoning and an early flood warning system. Additionally, the construction of reservoirs in upper reaches is being considered, with flood moderation as a key component.
The Meghalaya State Action Plan on Climate Change, currently being prepared by the Meghalaya Climate Change Centre, will focus on addressing climate-related challenges in the region.
