Shillong, Mar 21: Meghalaya’s premium ginger has been successfully exported to Dubai, marking a major milestone for the state’s agricultural sector. The development is expected to improve market access for farmers and strengthen Meghalaya’s position in the global spice trade.

A delegation of eight farmers from Meghalaya recently visited Dubai to gain firsthand exposure to international trade practices, consumer preferences, and quality standards. The visit provided them with crucial insights to enhance production and marketing strategies, aligning their produce with global demands.

Known for its high pungency, rich aroma, and organic quality, Meghalaya’s ginger has long been valued for its superior attributes. However, limited market access and supply chain challenges had restricted its reach beyond domestic markets. The latest export to Dubai represents a breakthrough, offering new opportunities for the state’s farmers.

The Meghalaya government, in collaboration with export agencies and agricultural cooperatives, has been actively promoting the state’s agricultural products in foreign markets. With rising global demand for high-quality, chemical-free spices, Meghalaya’s organic ginger holds immense potential for international trade.

Farmers involved in the initiative expressed optimism about the new market opportunity. “Seeing our ginger in Dubai’s markets is a proud moment. We hope this will open more avenues for us,” said one of the farmers from the delegation.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma shared the news on social media platform ‘X,’ stating, “Happy to share that Meghalaya’s premium ginger has made its way to Dubai this season! A proud moment as eight of our farmers visited Dubai, gaining firsthand exposure to international markets. This milestone ensures better income and strengthens Meghalaya’s place in the global spice trade.”

Meghalaya is also known for producing high-quality turmeric, black pepper, and Lakadong turmeric, which have gained recognition for their high curcumin content and medicinal properties. Experts believe that the successful export of ginger to Dubai could pave the way for more of the state’s agricultural products to enter international markets.

As demand grows, investments in logistics, packaging, and certification will be essential to maintaining product quality and ensuring a steady supply. Strengthening export infrastructure and complying with international trade regulations will require coordinated efforts from both government and private stakeholders.

While challenges remain, the successful export of Meghalaya’s ginger to Dubai marks a significant step forward, demonstrating the state’s potential in global agricultural trade.
