Agartala, March 21, 2025: Tripura’s former minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman had extended his support for the demand raised by the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) to introduce the Roman script for the Kokborok language. He asserted that the Congress has been advocating for this change for a long time, but successive governments have ignored the issue.
While on his way to the Tripura Assembly’s Budget Session on Friday, Sudip Roy Barman was stopped by TSF activists on the road.
Speaking to media personnel on the spot, he strongly criticized both the previous Left Front government and the current BJP-led administration for their inaction. “The Left Front government never paid any attention to the demand for introducing the Roman script in Kokborok. Unfortunately, even the present government is showing the same indifference,” he remarked.
The Congress leader emphasized that the people’s voices should not be neglected. “The government must understand the sentiments of the indigenous communities. They have been making a legitimate demand for years, yet both the past and present governments continue to evade responsibility,” he stated. Roy Barman urged the government to act without delay, reiterating, “The introduction of the Roman script in Kokborok is long overdue. The government should take immediate steps to fulfill this demand.”
His remarks have added momentum to the ongoing demand for linguistic recognition, further intensifying the debate on the issue.
