Agartala, March 24, 2025: The state has registered 123 cases of cybercrime, leading to the arrest of 74 individuals in the past three years, as disclosed during the second day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly session on Monday.
The information was provided in response to a query by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, who sought details on cybercrime incidents and the corresponding arrests in the state.
In a written reply, the Home Department confirmed that out of the registered cases, the police took suo motu action in nine instances. “To effectively address cybercrime and identify offenders, the State Home Department had established a Cybercrime Unit under the State Police Crime Branch through a notification issued on November 12, 2018,” the report stated.
The report further elaborated that crucial and sensitive cybercrime cases from various police stations are referred to the Cybercrime Unit for in-depth investigation with the approval of the Director General of Police. The Cybercrime Cell, working in tandem with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, plays a key role in unfreezing frozen bank accounts, recovering fraudulent money, removing objectionable social media content, and registering cybercrime complaints.
Efforts to curb cyber offenses also include extensive awareness campaigns, particularly through social media. “Dedicated Cybercrime Cells have been set up at the district level, and a trained team of 151 officers along with 113 police personnel has been deployed to handle cybercrime cases efficiently,” the report added.
