Kohima, Mar 25: N William Koso, a prominent football coach from Nagaland, tragically passed away on Tuesday morning following a road accident in Chumuakedima. He was rushed to the Referral Hospital but was declared dead by the attending medical team.
Koso, the first coach from Nagaland to earn the prestigious AFC ‘A’ Coaching License, made significant contributions to Indian football. He played a pivotal role in the creation of the Nagaland Super League (NSL), where he served as the technical committee convenor, ensuring the league maintained high standards of competition and professionalism. Koso was also deeply involved in coaching education, training and certifying several coaches, with many NSL coaches benefiting from his expertise.
Throughout his career, Koso held several key positions, including assistant coach at Aizawl FC, where he contributed to the team’s I-League victory, and head coach at Life Sports Football Club. As High Performance Manager at the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in Nagaland, he worked to elevate football coaching standards and mentored young athletes.
In a tribute to Koso, the NSL Governing Body announced the postponement of Playoff Match 2 between Barak FC and Nagaland United, which was originally scheduled for March 25. The match will now be played on March 26, 2025, at the same venue.
The NSL Governing Body expressed their condolences, saying, “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of Mr. William Koso. His contributions to football and his passion for the sport will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.”
