Agartala, March 28, 2025: The foundation stone for the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) Tripura campus was laid by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, marking a significant step towards advancing forensic science education in the region on March 08, 2022. However, the construction process has faced several hurdles leading to land reallocations and temporary arrangements for academic activities.

Initially, 49 acres of land was earmarked for the university in Srinagar under the West Tripura district. However, due to technical reasons, the project on that land was canceled. As an alternative, the government allocated 1.96 acres near the Buddha Mandir in Agartala city and an additional 15.16 acres in the R.K. Nagar area under same district for the university’s permanent campus.

Responding to a query raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman during the sixth day of the Assembly’s budget session, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Higher Education portfolio clarified that since the Srinagar land was never officially acquired, no compensation is required for any losses. He assured that work on the newly allotted land, including boundary walls and other essential infrastructure, will commence soon.

Meanwhile, to ensure the smooth functioning of academic programs, the university has been operating from a temporary campus in the Radhanagar area where the old B.Ed. College has been renovated. Classes officially began in the 2021-22 academic session offering four undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs.

“The government is committed to providing world-class forensic education in Tripura. The necessary construction will soon begin to ensure that the university gets its permanent campus at the earliest,” said Dr. Manik Saha in the Assembly.

With forensic science playing a crucial role in modern criminal investigations, the establishment of NFSU in Tripura is expected to strengthen research and professional training in this critical domain.
