Guwahati, Mar 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly constructed Kampur Railway Overbridge and the restored Kapili River Bridge on Sunday, improving connectivity in the region. The ₹63 crore railway overbridge replaces an existing level crossing gate, easing traffic movement for residents and commuters in Nagaon district.
Additionally, the Assam government has repurposed the historic Kapili River Bridge, originally built in 1958-59, into a dedicated pedestrian bridge and walking zone. Sarma inaugurated the revamped bridge, fulfilling a long-pending demand.
During the event, the Chief Minister shared a nostalgic moment, recalling his childhood role in the Assamese film Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati, in which he rode an elephant on the same bridge decades ago. To mark the occasion, he recreated the scene by riding an elephant on the newly rebuilt bridge.
Taking to social media, Sarma wrote, “Perhaps some of you may not know that many decades ago, I played the role of a child in a film. In one scene of that film, I was riding an elephant on a bridge. Today, the same bridge was rebuilt and dedicated to the public, and I also rode an elephant again. This is called, Reel to Real.”
The inauguration marks a major infrastructure boost for the region while also reviving a nostalgic connection to Assam’s cinematic history.
