Aizawl, Apr 8: In response to a rabies outbreak in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, the Saitual district administration in Mizoram has banned the import of dogs to prevent the spread of the disease.

The order, issued by Saitual District Magistrate Lalngura Tlau, came into effect on Monday and will remain in force for two months. The district shares a border with Churachandpur, raising concerns over potential transmission.

As per the order, all dog owners must ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies and must not allow them to stray in public areas. The public has also been instructed to report any sick or dead dogs to the nearest animal husbandry and veterinary office.

In cases of dog bites, owners could face penalties of up to six months’ imprisonment or a fine of Rs 5,000.

The district administration said the measures have been taken under existing legal provisions to protect public health.
