Residents of Sagolband Meino Leirak in Imphal West district staged a sit-in protest on Wednesday, condemning a shocking firing incident at a children’s home for orphaned boys. Protesters held placards and chanted slogans demanding the immediate arrest of the unidentified gunmen responsible for the attack.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. when at least two masked individuals opened fire at the Children’s Home for Boys. Between six to eight rounds were reportedly fired before the assailants fled the scene. CCTV footage captured the presence of the armed duo. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the children or staff.

Khaidem Ongbi Romita, who runs the home, expressed her alarm over the attack. “It is really unfortunate that a place meant for children’s safety has been targeted. The reason behind the attack is still unknown. We appeal to everyone not to let such incidents happen again,” she said.

The children’s home, managed by the United Social Development Association under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) of the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur, currently shelters around 30 boys.

Police have registered a case and launched a probe into the incident. Security has been heightened in the area as tensions continue to run high.
