Agartala, April 11, 2025: In a deeply disturbing incident reflecting societal decay, an elderly woman in the Tripura’s Kanchanmala area under the Golaghati Assembly constituency of Sepahijala district was allegedly assaulted by her own son and daughter-in-law.

Sources informed that Karnajit Majumdar of Ward No. 2 in Kanchanmala married Dipali Das, a divorced woman several years back. Initially, family life seemed stable, but tensions soon escalated. The victim Sandhya Majumdar, Karnajit’s elderly mother has alleged repeated physical and mental abuse by her son and daughter-in-law.

On Friday afternoon, the situation took a violent turn when Dipali Das reportedly assaulted Sandhya Majumdar. “I have been suffering silently for days. My daughter-in-law beats me and my own son supports her,” said the elderly mother, sobbing as she recounted her ordeal to the police.

Despite multiple local attempts at mediation, local leaders failed to resolve the dispute. Upon receiving information, personnel from Amtali Police Station rushed to the scene, witnessed the aftermath firsthand and issued a stern warning to the accused duo.

“This kind of cruelty towards a mother is not just socially unacceptable, it’s a legal offense,” an officer from Amtali Police said.

Ward No. 2 Panchayat member Sudhir Chowdhury, who also visited the spot, expressed outrage: “Such acts tarnish the values of our society. This is not just a family issue, it is a matter of humanity.”

Local residents are now urging the Tripura Commission for Women and the Tripura Human Rights Commission to intervene and conduct a thorough investigation. “When a mother, who gives life and raises her children with love, is treated with such inhumanity, justice must be swift and unforgiving,” said a local resident.

A case is expected to be registered against Karnajit Majumdar and Dipali Das.
