Kohima, Apr 16: The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, has announced a complete ban on the burning of forest and jungle areas in the district following a surge in forest fire incidents. The order was issued after it was observed that such fires often caused by deliberate or negligent actions have resulted in the destruction of wildlife habitats, public property, and posed serious risks to human life.

Invoking Section 162 of the BNSS, the DC classified the act of forest burning as a public nuisance, likely to disturb public tranquillity and endanger life and property. The directive mandates strict compliance from all individuals and groups.

Violators of the ban will face legal action under the provisions of the BNSS, the Nagaland Forest Act, 1968, and the Rules of Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland, 1937.
