After a prolonged battle with the censor board, Lipstick Under My Burkha is all set to unveil its burkha on Friday, July 21, 2017, with some voluntary cuts. The movie has been making news since its unflinching trailer was out. Touted as the “most controversial movie of the year”, it has already bagged the Spirit of Asia Prize and the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality after being premiered at Tokyo and Mumbai Film Festival. The movie tells the story of “4 secret lives and 4 fantasies”- one secret life being that of Rehana, portrayed by Assam’s Plabita Borthakur.

In an exclusive interaction with Northeast Today, the PK actress talks about Lipstick Under My Burkha, her character, and beyond.

NET: The “most controversial film of the year” is about to hit the theatres in a few days. How do you feel about it?

Plabita: It’s been a long journey and an even longer wait. And now, I cannot contain my excitement. Excited! That’s how I feel :)

NET: Tell us something about your character Rehana.

Plabita: I grew up in a quaint little town, always dreaming of moving to a big city to pursue my dreams. Like with all of us, once I got there, I found myself amidst a crowd that was so different from what I’d imagined. I was confused about who I wanted to be, or what I wanted.

Rehana’s character is a depiction of all such girls. I’m sure a lot of us will connect with her, and love her too.

NET: What kind of preparations or homework have you done for this character?

Plabita: It wasn’t easy getting into Rehana’s shoes. She is vivacious and sprightly, but also secretive at the same time. There are always a thousand things on her mind.

Thanks to the team at Lipstick… I underwent numerous workshops and culture study sessions, to make me come so close to who Rehana really is.

NET: The trailer says “4 secret lives, 4 fantasies”. What’s your secret and fantasy in the movie?

Plabita: Secrets are not supposed to be let out in the open before they are meant to. You must come to the movies, with your friends on the 21st of July, to find out :D

NET: We are definitely going to watch the movie. So, Plabita tell us what’s your take on Censor board’s initial decision of not clearing the movie for release?

Plabita: Now that it’s behind us, I think I’ll just let it pass and savor the present. Having said that, I do believe that in this day and age, we need a more progressive outlook and stop treating Women as safe keepers of the ‘Societal Rules Safety Vault’. And yes, you definitely cannot cite ‘Lady Oriented’ as the reason for banning a movie.

NET: How was your experience of sharing the screen with Ratna Pathak Shah and Konkona Sen Sharma?

Plabita: Intimidating, to start with, knowing their body of work, prominence and incredible talent. But soon I realized, it is their greatness and ability to make a new comer like me feel so comfortable, that makes them who they are, despite the stardom. I have learnt so much from them.

NET: How do you think the audience of your hometown is going to perceive the movie?

Plabita: I am sure they will love it. I quite know, that the Assamese film industry has been undergoing huge transformation lately. And so has the audience :)

NET: What are your upcoming projects?

Plabita: I am currently shooting for a film, set in rural Rajasthan (And I love that accent). It’s scheduled for release, early next year.

Thanks a lot Plabita for sparing your precious time for us. We, here at NET, hope that once the burkha is unveiled, the lipstick will conquer the box office.
