Even as the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has stressed on the need for the abrogation of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the prominent student’s organization of the State has also taken into cognizance the demand of people to constitute an alternative political force in Assam.

The masses will decide as to what this alternative political force will be, and how it would function. After February, this topic will be carried forward. This was stated by AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) president Dipanko Kumar Nath while speaking to media persons here on Thursday.

He added, “The people of Assam are feeling the need for such an alternative to protect their identity, land, and culture. The masses including the intellectuals and artistes have already conveyed this to us. We believe that only such a potent political force will be able to challenge the Central government.”

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi pointed out, “To carry out people’s command is the responsibility of AASU and all the like-minded organizations. In the present time, there is a need for an alternative political force as none of the present political parties — be it the BJP, the Congress, the AGP or the others — is giving importance to the sentiment, logic and the unified stand of the silent majority. We must bring to fruition the call of time. The topic will be discussed threadbare at the conventions to be held at the district and also State level.”

The AASU leader, however, clarified, “The main aim of AASU is not to form political parties. AASU’s primary aim is the abrogation of CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). We will carry forward our legal fight against the CAA.”

The topic of an alternative political force in Assam has gained in prominence against the backdrop of mass uprisings first against the CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) and then the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). And with the government adamant on implementing the CAA by not paying any heed to the concerns of the masses, the issue for giving birth to an alternative potent political force is being hotly debated across the State.
