GUWAHATI, Jan 9: Boiling over an alleged rape and murder case in Kharmuza village in Goalpara district, an agitated crowd surrounded the Kharmuza police outpost on January 8, demanding the execution of the accused. According to reports, on 6th January at around 12 o’clock, the accused Manuwar Hussain (Madhu) trespassed Abul Kalam, a resident villager’s house in his absence and attempted to rape his wife, and shortly after, set her on fire, fleeing the spot. Seeing the blazing flames and hearing her cries for help, the neighbours rushed to the spot and doused the fire. She was then taken to the Goalpara Civil Hospital but as her wounds intensified, she was transferred to the Guwahati Medical College. Unfortunately, the woman’s body had sustained a 95% burn and she succumed to her injuries yesterday morning. Shortly after her dead body was brought into the village, a few villagers got agitated over the untoward incident and gheraoed the police outpost demanding the execution of the culprit.

As a heated state of affairs ensued, the police officials joined forces and brought the situation under control, assuring them that the culprit will be punished. Thereafter, an FIR was lodged by the victim’s family in the police station, leading to the arrest of the accused Manuwar Hussain today. Meanwhile, the agitated crowd accused the culprit’s parents of having been involved too and demanded due punishment for them.
