A change to India’s anti-terror law that gives the government the power to designate an individual as a “terrorist” was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Friday with 147 lawmakers voting in favor of the bill and 42 against.

The Lok Sabha has already passed the bill.

The Rajya Sabha also rejected the Opposition-sponsored motion seeking to send the amendment to select committee with 104 votes against it as compared to 85 in favor.

The voting followed an intense debate that saw Home Minister Amit Shah attacking the Congress, telling the party to look at ‘its past’ before accusing the government of misusing the law.
