The Congress on Thursday reacted strongly to Bhopal BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Thakur’s comment that Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, was a “deshbhakt” (patriot).

Sadhvi Pragya, who was reacting to Kamal Haasan’s comment on Hindu terror and Nathuram Godse, on Thursday said: “Nathuram Godse was a deshbhakt, is a deshbhakt and will remain a deshbhakt. People calling him a terrorist should instead look within.”

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, at a press conference in New Delhi, slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party for its party candidate Pragya Thakur’s “deshbhakt” comment and called it an “insult to the country” and “attack on Gandhi ideology”.

“India’s soul is under attack by the successors of Nathuram Godse, the BJP ruling dispensation. BJP leaders are describing the murderer of the father of the nation — Mahatma Gandhi — as a true nationalist. This is an insult to the country. And attack on Gandhi ideology,” Randeep Surjewala said.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh condemned Sadhya Pragya’s comment and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah should “apologise”.

“Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and the state BJP should give their statements and apologise to the nation. I condemn this statement, Nathuram Godse was a killer, glorifying him is not patriotism, it is sedition,” Digvijaya Singh was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP GVL Narasimha Rao said the party “does not agree” with Pragya Thakur’s statement.

“‘Nathuram Godse was, is and will remain a deshbhakt’: BJP does not agree with this statement, we condemn it. Party will ask her for clarification, she should apologise publicly for this statement,” Narasimha Rao told.
