The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation organised Swachhathon 1.0 – Swachh Bharat Hackathon – during August’ 2017 under the agies of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) to outsource solutions to some of the Sanitation and Hygiene challenges faced in various parts of the country. The competition was open to all stakeholders including schools, colleges, institutions, professionals and others.

The entire event was held in three phases which included screening round of the online entries from the participants. Demonstration round with videos and write ups. The Arunachal Pradesh Government nominated the innovations conceived by Ram Prakash Tiwari, JE, Yupia Division, PHE and Water Supply Department who was selected among the 3053 entries received country wise and from professionals across the World.

His innovation was shortlisted to showcase in the semi-final rounds in the category of ‘TOILET TECHNOLOGY IN DIFFICULT TERRAIN’ which included presentation including 01 minute of video shows. The technology was all about using locally available materials basically matured bamboos cladded with plastics for use in the twin pit latrines as a suitable alternative to bricks, which was selected for the finals. The Grand Jury included personalities like Naina Lal Kidwai, Bindeshwar Pathak and the Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Parameswaran Iyer.

The innovative technology bagged the first prize comprising plaque, certificate and cash award of Rs.3, 00,000/- which was awarded by Union Minister SS Ahluwalia and State Minister for Drinking Water & Sanitation Ramesh Jigajinagi on Friday (8th September) at All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

The cost effective and sustainable solution was built on pilot basis by a beneficiary Tana Teshi from Midpu in Lekha Panchayat under the direct supervision, and technical guidance of Ram Prakash Tiwari and the team of Yupia PHE & WS Division including Navya MS, Zilla Swachh Bharat Prerak (ZSBP), Papum Pare District. The winning State contingent was represented by Joi Angu SE, (Sanitation), PHE & WS Department, Itanagar, R.P. Tiwari, J.E. and Navya MS.

The technology developed will be a suitable cost effective alternative to using bricks, which is to be adopted in Arunachal Pradesh for achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) by December’ 2017. RP Tiwari has donated the cash award amounting to Rupees three lakh for the cause of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) in the State.
