Raghvendra Awasthi, who is temporarily holding the DGP post, has said both Assam and Meghalaya are coordinating with each other in tackling the repercussions of the publication of the NRC final draft list.

Awasthi told media persons that he spoke with his counterpart in Assam about the tension that has gripped Meghalaya.

Meghalaya police are on alert in the border areas of the state to ensure that there is no impact of the publication of the draft NRC in Assam on the neighbouring state, he said and added that law and order “is under control in Garo Hills and police are keeping a close watch since one of the constituencies is going to election later this month”.

KSU had earlier set up infiltration check gates in border areas to detect illegal immigrants trying to enter the state. However, no untoward incidents have been reported in the state.

When asked about his priorities, Awasthi said he would like the state police to act as an instrument of service to people and make police more approachable to the people of the state.
