Union Jal Shakti Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is arriving in Guwahati on Monday evening to take stock of the flood situation in Assam, even as MPs in Rajya Sabha demanded that the flood problem be declared as a national problem.

AGP MP Biren Baishya on Monday called on Shekhawat to appraise him about the prevailing flood situation in Assam. “The Minister conveyed that he is leaving for Assam this evening and tour some of the flood affected areas on Tuesday,” Baishya told this newspaper.

Earlier in the Rajya Sabha the issue was raised by the Congress and AGP during Special Mention.

Asserting that the situation is very critical, Baishya said 28 districts of Assam are facing heavy floods. Already nine people have lost their lives and many people are still missing.

“The Assam Government has provided all possible assistance and already, an amount of Rs 100 crore has been spent on the relief work. Many parts of Assam are totally cut off from the rest of the country. I am requesting the Government to look after the people of Assam at this critical juncture. I would like to request the Government to declare flood as a national problem,” Baishya said.

Raising the issue, Ripun Bora said that a team of experts from the Centre should immediately be rushed to Assam to guide and help the Assam Government combat the havoc caused by floods.

“One Union Minister must also go there to take stock of the situation. For the last two years, the Calamity Relief Fund and the Disaster Management Fund due to the Assam Government have not been released by the Central Government,” Bora said.

Bora demanded that the funds should immediately be released to the State Government. The floods have become a regular phenomenon and we have to face this problem every year. So, it should be declared as a national problem.

Earlier, the Assam Congress MPs including Bhubaneswar Kalita, Ripun Bora, Ranee Narah, Pradyut Bordoloi, Abdul Khaleque and Sanjay Singh staged a token protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in front of the Parliament House.
