The All Assam Sanyogi Shikshak Karmi Union staged a dharna at the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan office at Kahilipara on Wednesday, where 1500 sanyogi teachers participated.

The main demand of the Sanyogi Union was for a special TET for the 3559 sanyogi teachers. In 2005 and 2006, these teachers were appointed according to their educational qualification and eligibility through village education committee and tea garden education committee. As they were appointed on contractual basis, their appointments were renewed every 11 months. However, on March 31, 2012, they were unceremoniously relieved from duty.

The Union claimed that the Government sacked them without prior notice and was a sudden jolt. The sanyogi teachers received a remuneration of Rs 1000 per month initially which was later increased to Rs 3000. The Union further said that jobs of other sanyogi teachers from outside the State were regularized, however, the same has not been done in Assam.

The Union had a meeting with the education department on November 1, 2018, after which it was assured that a special TET for the sanyogi teachers would be held during the first phase of 2019. Since the Government reneged on their assurance, the Union staged a protest on Wednesday and set a dead-line of November 25, by which they demanded their issues resolved. However, the protest later turned chaotic after the involvement of para-millitants and city police.
