Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced setting up of four new universities in the State. The universities will be opened at Bajali, Bihpuria, Hojai and Majuli.

The proposed four universities are Bhattadev University at Bajali, Madhabdev University at Bihpuria, Rabindranath University at Hojai and Assam Cultural University at Majuli.

While three proposed universities will be upgrades of existing colleges, only one of them will be totally new. The universities at Bajali, Bihpuria and Hojai will be upgraded from the existing college set-ups, Sarma told mediapersons. Only the Assam Cultural University at Majuli will be new.

The minister further announced that the Education Department has also decided to convert 89 single-stream colleges of the State into double-stream colleges. The colleges will be given the option of opening any stream – either Arts or Commerce or Science – in addition to their existing stream. Sarma said the process will be completed between September and 15th October.
