Xoixobote Dhemalite is all set to hit the theatres on 8th February. Northeast Today caught up with the talented and ever gorgeous Dipannita Sharma who is playing a pivotal role in the movie. Read ahead to know more.
- Tell us something about the movie and your character in the movie.
Ans: Xhoixobote Dhemalite is a human story of children growing up in times of violence. It’s about parenting during such trying times. It’s about finding hope when you might think there is no hope. It’s a beautiful sensitive story about real people. My part is that of a parent who is caught between trying to understand the situation around & bringing up her children right in such a situation.
2. How easy/challenging it was to get into the skin of the character?
Ans: it was easy & challenging at the same time. It was easy because for me it was a ‘homecoming’ of sorts. It was my first assamese film & I was excited that I was going to speak in my mother tongue in a film, a language I grew up speaking, also the fact that the era that was going to be portrayed ( the 80s of assam ) was something that I was familiar with. The challenge was to portray a small town Assamese woman of the 80s ( because I was a child then ) with conviction & to make it acceptable & real for the audience . Once it started winning accolades at various festivals including my very first best actress award at the love international film festival in Los Angeles, U.S.A i was relieved that perhaps I had achieved what I had set out to do in the film. For inspiration I had turned to my memories of certain traits or mannerisms of my aunts & other women who I had grown up watching, especially when I used to visit my parents hometowns in Assam. The rest I relied on my interpretation of the character, which I was thankfully given the freedom to do by my Director Bidyut Kotoky.
- How different or similar is ‘Dipannita’ with the Character?
Ans : I think I’m similar in the fact that I am as passionate about my land as the character is in the film … I’m different in the fact that, I am seldom ever helpless or confused as the character is at certain times ( but that could also be a predicament of a parent ) .
- Overall experience of working in the movie.
Ans: it was a life changing experience for me, one that will be etched in my memory forever. I learnt & evolved as an actor, as a human being thanks to my first Assamese feature film. It was an emotional journey, one which occupies & will continue to occupy, a special place in my heart, in my life.
- What can the audience expect from the movie?
Ans: audiences can expect a heartfelt Assamese film, which is an enjoyable watch with family & which has an important piece of our history attached to it.
6. Xhoixobote Dhemalite is your first Assamese film. Any future projects in from this region?
Ans: I’m looking at a few. In fact going to start working on one really soon but will talk about that in the future, when the time is right.
- Message for the youth
Ans: Hear everyone out but listen only to your gut.
- Any future projects?
Ans: There are a few on the anvil including a digital feature film, a short film, a clothing brand & a hair care brand shoots. Apart from that I’m working on starting my first production sometime in the summer this year, with either a short film or something in the digital space.
