Bloating, as the term defines is swelling or distension of body parts. Even though the term usually refers to abdominal bloating or bloated stomach that generally causes due to indigestion or constipation, however, with the change in lifestyle it has become a common early symptom of menstruation, as a result of most of the women nowadays gain weight just before their periods. Northeast Today shares a few easy ways that shall help you to get rid of period bloating.

Reduce Salt Intake

In order to minimize the pre-menstrual bloating, it is very essential to reduce salt intake. The sodium in salt can increase the amount of water a person’s body retains, thus limiting salty foods will help to decrease water retention and improve period bloating.

Consume Potassium-Rich Food

Eating potassium-rich food such as spinach, sweet potato, bananas, avocados etc likely to reduce period bloating. Research shows potassium decreases sodium levels and increases urine production. In this way, potassium may help reduce water retention and improve period bloating.

Stay Hydrated

For reducing pre-menstrual bloating it is very essential to drink plenty of water and remain hydrated. Drinking more water can help to improve water retention and kidney function. However, avoid ice-cubes or ice-water.

Curtail Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour and processed sugars increases insulin level in the blood, which causes the kidneys to retain more sodium. Increased sodium levels lead to more water retention. For those who are looking to reduce water retention and improve period bloating, it is best to avoid refined carbohydrates.

Workout Regularly

Regular exercise is the key to reduce pre-menstrual bloating and other PMS symptoms. To stay healthy and avoid such symptoms one should aim for minimum 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week.
