Tez Hazarika, Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s son in a statement has said that his father’s name and words are being invoked and celebrated publicly while plans are ongoing to pass an unpopular bill regarding citizenship that is undermining his father’s documented position. Tez said that in reality, the Bill is in direct opposition to what Dr Hazarika “believed in his hearts of hearts.”

He added that his father’s fans, which constituted a majority of people from the Northeast, indigenous populations of India and more people from the country, he would never have endorsed what is “an underhanded way of pushing a law against the will and benefit of the majority in a manner that also seems to be “grossly un-constitutional, un-democratic and un-Indian.”

Tez further stated that adopting this bill in any form at this point, or in future in the way it is being proffered will have a sad and undesirable effect that will not only disrupt “the quality of life, language,  identity and power balance of the region” but also by undermining his father’s position by “delivering a wreaking blow to the harmony, inner integrity and unity of the secular and democratic Republic of India.”

“Bharat Ratnas and longest bridges while necessary, will not promote the peace and prosperity of the citizens of India. Only just popular laws and foresight on the part of leadership will,” he said.

Tez then added that numerous journalists have asked him whether or not he will accept the Bharat Ratna for his father. However, he has not yet received any formal invitation so far and that there is nothing to receive and that “how the center moves on this matter far outweighs in importance the awarding and receiving of such national recognition—a display of short-lived cheap thrills.”
