The nodal foot-over bridge at the northern end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) collapsed on March 14 leaving six commuters dead and at least 34 injured.

Mumbai police has lodged an FIR against some Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Central Railway (CR) officials for negligence leading to death. A charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder charge might also be added after confirming details about the role of BMC and railways.

A safety audit of the bridge was conducted by the civic authority in 2018 that had declared the bridge ‘safe.’ The incident took place around 7:31 p.m. The flooring of the ‘Himalaya bridge’ on D.N. Road broke and took down scores of rush-hour commuters from a height of 35 feet.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs. 50,000 for the injured. He said that he has ordered a high-level inquiry of the incident.
