A bomb blast took place in Imphal on Thursday morning, injuring a minor girl, despite heavy security measures arrangement in place to prevent any untoward incident in view of the Republic Day celebration on January 26 .

The bomb suspected to be an improvised device (IED) exploded at 4.55 am apposite to S3 coaching centre at Nagamapal, about 50 metre away from the crossing on the RIMS road, according to passersby who witnessed the incident in the morning.

One 10-year-old girl by the name Mardhya Wangkem, staying at the boarding of the coaching centre, was hit in the forehead by the glass fragments of a window pane that was broken by the impact of the blast. She was rushed to the RIMS hospital and was discharged after giving first aid, sources said.

The bomb was planted near an electric post. Several shops along the road were damaged by the blast. The window panes of the coaching centre were also damaged.

Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, K Meghachandra told the ‘Imphal Free Press’ that some valley-based proscribed underground group was suspected to behind the incident. A case has been registered at Imphal Police station and investigation is underway, he added.
