Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his Cabinet ministers on Monday distributed branded leather shoes, ankle boots, belts and other uniform items to state police personnel.

The uniform items were distributed through 37 Superintendents of Police and Commanding Officers of different battalions based in the state at a function held at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Biren Singh said that the significance of the function was to maintain transparency in governance. The government was committed to provide quality and branded uniform items to police personnel who safeguard life and property of citizens. Stating that law and order has tremendously improved under the present regime, the Chief Minister appealed to the people to support the government in curbing corruption in recruitment, promotion, transfer and postings in various departments.

He said the distribution programme was “very meaningful”, as it provides an opportunity to people to give due respect to the police personnel for their remarkable duties towards safeguarding lives and property of the people and maintaining peace in the region.

It is due to the commitment and hard work of the police department that the government has been able to combat the drug menace in Manipur, he said.

Recalling the substandard ‘belt scam’ in the police department, Biren Singh said that earlier, the police personnel bought their own uniforms as substandard uniforms were supplied to them in the past. The present government would never let such a scandal happen again and would provide branded and standard uniforms to all police personnel, he said.

Appreciating the state government for the initiative, Director General of Police LM Khaute informed the gathering that the state authorities procured the ankle boots, leather shoes, belts, etc., for assistant sub-inspectors, and men and women police personnel following all necessary formalities under the police modernisation scheme.

Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, ministers Th Biswajit (Works and Commerce and Industries), L Jayantakumar (Health and Family Welfare), Karam Shyam (Consumers Affairs Food and Public Distribution), Losii Dikho (Public Health Engineering Department), N Kayasii (Fisheries), and MLAs and top civil and police officials attended the function.
