The Budget Session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly began in Imphal on Friday with State Governor Dr Najma Heptulla’s address. The Governor, in her speech, highlighted various development programmes of the State Government.

Dr Heptulla revealed that over 644 cadres of various militant groups have joined the mainstream. Out of them, 574 cadres have already left the designated camps after completing three years of term, the Governor said, adding that the Government is committed to development through peace and is open for talks with all insurgent groups.

Stating that women police stations have been opened in all districts and made functional, Dr Heptulla said the Government has also decided to open two fast-track courts for trial of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases and rape cases in a time-bound manner.

A proposal is also under consideration to open creches and nursery schools for children of women inmates, she added.

With respect to the financial sector, the Governor said that the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at the current prices for 2019-20 is estimated at Rs 30,131 crore, which is a growth of 16 per cent over 2018-19. The GSDP growth for the next financial year is expected at 11 per cent at the current prices.
