BJP nominee for lone Lok Sabha seat Nirupam Chakma on Monday said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is not dangerous for Mizoram.

Chakma, who filed his nomination paper on Monday, told reporters that the bill was politically motivated by some political parties in the state without knowing the ground realities.

He said the bill seeks to grant six religious communities — Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis who fled religious persecution from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

It seeks to amend the provision of granting citizenship to these communities, who already settled in the country by reducing the quantum of year from 11 to 6, he said.

Citing that there will be no person to apply for such citizenship in Mizoram, Chakma said the bill has been politically motivated to spread anti-BJP feeling.

“The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has already lapsed. If the new bill comes, we do not know in what form it will come again,” he said.

Chakma also expressed hope that the BJP will return to power at the Centre.

Citing that the BJP’s central leadership has promised cabinet berth to Mizoram, he said the state has an ample chance of having cabinet minister at the centre if he was elected to Lok Sabha. He added that he will give priority to border security.

Chakma, who had served as MLA for five terms and held the post of minister of state for 10 years in the erstwhile Lal Thanhawla-led Congress government, said he will be much better than other candidates as he has vast experience in the field of politics and administration.
