Chief Minister PS Tamang has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting him to exempt Sikkim from the purview of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

In his letter, the Chief Minister stated that there is apprehension and confusion in Sikkim regarding the citizenship Bill. He also brought to the notice of the Union Home Minister that around 75,000 people left out at the time of merger of Sikkim with the Union of India were granted Indian citizenship during 1989-90. Tamang also highlighted the Constitutional safeguard of Article 371(F), which governs the State of Sikkim and protects its old laws and inner line permits issued by it.

The Chief Minister also called on Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.
