Acting on a tip off, custom sleuths of Shillong have seized 784 kg of Ganja (Cannabis) worth Rs Rs 49,24,340 after intercepting a truck near Diengpasoh Toll gate on Shillong Bye-Pass.

The custom sleuths intercepted the truck bearing Punjab registration near Diengpasoh toll gate which was on his way from near Agartala to Guwahati.

“Consignment of Cannabis packed in 51 packets was concealed in a specially made secret chamber made behind the driver’s cabin. The offending narcotics drug was loaded from a place near Agartala and was meant for delivery at Guwahati,” said deputy commissioner (Hqrs Prev) I.R. Kharkongor, adding that the driver has been arrested and the truck has been seized and a case registered under the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985.

Kharkongor also informed that two other number plates having Nagaland registration were also seized from the truck and initial investigation revealed that the truck had regularly been used to carry cannabis from Tripura using false number plates.

“Drivers have been apprehended and further investigation has been launched to apprehend other persons involved in procurement, transportation and smuggling of the drugs,” Kharkongor added.

Informing about another seizure, Kharkongor stated on May 11, 2017 Hqrs. preventive unit, Shillong had seized 1500 kg of Cannabis valued Rs.1.05 crore from a truck at Silchar which was coming from Imphal.”

According to Kharkongor, Manipur and Tripura are the main source of cannabis in this region and organised gangs are actively involved in transporting the same to different parts of the country adopting various modus operandi.
