Normal life was affected in Manipur on Monday due to the ‘cease work’ movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
The movement launched by the Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MANPAC) from 1 am of December 9 is expected to continue till 3 am of December 11.

Market areas in the state capital, including the iconic Ima Market, wore a desolate look due to the cease work movement. Local transport services also suspended normal service for the day. However, there was no report of any untoward incident during the day.

MANPAC – a conglomerate of several civil society organisations – has been initiating various public movements to oppose implementation of CAB in Manipur and the North East. Two student bodies of the state are also supporting the movement.

Supporting the MANPAC’s movement, women vendors of temporary markets staged a sit-in demonstration at Khwairamband area. The All Manipur Bar Association members also staged a similar demonstration at Uripok.

MANPAC convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, in a hurriedly called press meet on Monday, said they welcome the Centre’s move to enforce ILP in Manipur, and so the proposed shutdown call by MANPAC will be relaxed temporarily to hold a public meeting on Tuesday and take a resolution for further course of action.

However, the All Manipur Students’ Union, a constituent of the NESO, is reportedly scheduled to continue the 15-hour total shutdown in Manipur from 3 am of December 10 in support of the shutdown called by the NESO.
