A two-day celebration of 100 years of introduction of Manipuri dance in Santiniketan and a festival of dance drama was inaugurated by Manipur Governor and Chairperson of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) Dr Najma Heptulla at the auditorium of the academy in Imphal on Thursday.

Vice Chairman of JNMDA Prof H Tombi Singh and Director L Upendra, among others, were present at the inaugural function.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Heptulla said that the occasion is indeed historic, auspicious and joyous as the academy achieved the first milestone completing 100 years of introduction of Manipuri dance in Santiniketan, a prestigious centre of learning not only in the country but in the world.

Artistes from the State have presented innumerable shows in the country and abroad, and have drawn commendation and recognition. Manipur is today known to the world through her rich performing arts and culture.

Dr Heptulla said she is confident that the JNMDA’s endeavour to produce dance dramas as well as new performing arts would be able to disseminate the message of peace and harmony to the people of the country.

In his speech, Prof H Tombi Singh said Manipuri dance has unique features which are well developed.

The Production Unit of the JNMDA, which is the first-of-its-kind national institution for Manipuri dance, was established in 1954 under the patronage of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru with the sole objective of preserving and disseminating Manipuri culture. It has so far produced more than 40 dance dramas.

A professor of dance at Santiniketan and the general secretary of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad of Tripura were felicitated at the function which was attended by scholars, artistes and students.
