Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K Sangma has expressed confidence that the NPP will win the Tura Parliamentary seat despite the Congress’ decision to field former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

“We know that the party is getting a good response at the grassroot level. The party organization is very upbeat and therefore I am sure that the NPP would win the Tura seat by a very big margin,” the Chief Minister said while talking to reporters here on Thursday.

Stating that the decision of the Congress to field the former Chief Minister is not going to have any effect on the chances of the NPP to win the Tura seat, Conrad said the NPP has a very strong presence throughout the Garo Hills region.

“The people are seeing the kind of work we have been doing. I am sure that the people of the State would like to see the good work of the present Government continue,” the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, he said that the MDA allies are pretty clear with the decision of fielding a common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
“Right from the beginning, we had made abundantly clear that we are committed to have a common candidate. The people of the State also know what we are planning to do,” Conrad said.

It may be mentioned that the Congress had decided to field former Chief Minister from the Tura Parliamentary seat and sitting MP, Vincent H Pala from the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Staff Correspondent adds: Meanwhile, the Congress party is confident that it could wrest the Tura Lok Sabha seat, a bastion that was held sway by the late PA Sangma before his two offspring’s took over. This time, the daughter of late PA Sangma ,Kumari Agatha Sangma is set to be the announced as the candidate for the Tura seat.

“While the fight during the elections is always tough, the BJP whose allies include the NPP have been exposed”, stated State Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma, adding, “We have already devised strategies to reach out to the people”.

The Congress will kickstart its extensive campaign in the five districts of Garo Hills from Resubelpara, North Garo Hills.
