Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday ruled out any “tussle” between the State Government and Governor Tathagata Roy, although the latter has had a different point of view with the Government on a few vital issues.

Roy recently turned down the State Government’s recommendation to impose the Administrator’s Rule in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

The recommendation was forwarded by the State Government after its alliance at the council lost majority and the power shifted to the Congress.

Roy has also not given his assent to the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Ordinance and is said to be studying the legal and constitutional validity of the ordinance. The ordinance will make it mandatory for a visitor to the State to register first, like an Inner Line Permit. “We are reading too much into it,” Sangma said on the sidelines of a programme, when asked about the recent decisions of Roy.

“We have sent the file (ordinance) to the Governor and he is examining it. We will have to wait and see when the Governor gives his assent,” Sangma said.

Reiterating that the ordinance will not have any adverse effect on the State’s tourism sector, Sangma said tourists register even now when they check into hotels.

“All we are saying is register with us,” he said. Further elaborating on the issue, he said: “When you go to Mumbai or Delhi, you also have to give an ID card and we are also asking for identity. It is the same registration process, but it will be done in a centralised manner.”

He said that once tourists understand how the process would work, they would be happy to register since it is meant for their protection and overall safety of the State.
