During the 26th convocation of NEHU here on Monday, Sangma said he would be travelling through Bangladesh’s roads so that he crosses some of the lesser known parts of the neighbouring country. He said he would meet farmers, entrepreneurs, students and business people and explore opportunities for the people of the North East and India.

Sangma is expected to cross into Bangladesh through the Dawki border and move into Sylhet district and then drive right up to Dhaka. He will also meet local leaders and call upon some of Bangladesh’s top leadership.

Sangma said India and Bangladesh have an annual trade of $10 billion, but out of this total, Meghalaya’s share is only 1 per cent despite sharing the longest border (443 km) with the neighbouring country. Meghalaya has been trading with Bangladesh mostly in coal, limestone and agriculture produce. A substantial chunk of trade between the two sides is unregulated.
