The Congress has criticised the Sikkim Government for appointing Sunil Saraogi as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister.

Addressing a press conference, Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee president Bharat Basnet stated that the appointment was invalid since it did not comply with the spirit of Article 371(F), which provides special status to the State.

He added that Saraogi is a “non-Sikkimese” and his appointment violates Article 371(F) which provides for appointment of only domiciled Indian Sikkimese to government posts.

Social activist Passang Sherpa also lashed out at the Government and accused the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) of backtracking on its election promises. He stated that such appointments would dilute the spirit of Article 371(F).

SKM spokesperson Jacob Khaling, however, said that such appointments are made keeping in mind the “role they are required to play in the national arena”.

Khaling maintained that Saraogi’s appointment is honorary and does not violate Article 371(F) in any manner.
