Amlan Jyoti Das writes about making doodle art a profitable career option…

Initial Remarks

The term “doodle art” is becoming quite an illustrious form of art and has also begun to create a niche for itself in the mainstream form of art. Something which we all used to draw in the back pages of our notebooks has now evolved into a genre of its own. After evolving to a very highly valued form of art, doodle art has brought on with it the plethora of possibilities which can be applied in today’s fast-paced world.

Understanding Doodle

A doodle is a drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be composed of random and abstract lines. It is a wandering thought, uninhibited and untidy. Different doodlers have their own preferences, styles, motivations, inspirations, but all doodlers know the marvellous, mind-boggling reverie of doodling, which happens to offer a breather from other mainstream modes of content creation.

Mixed Bag

Visual artistry is the fastest growing sector in the entertainment industry. This includes a range of individuals; from installation artist, architect, fashion designer, product designer, storyboard artists and so on. So, primitive works on entertainment industry are gone with the winds. Now is the time when visual effects are taking over the industry and one of the latest and fastest growing trends is doodle art.

Even Google provides an arena for doodle art. According to them “doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.”

The doodle team in Google is always ever ready to hear ideas from users which one can email at “[email protected]” with ideas for the next Google doodle. The team receives hundreds of requests every day.

A doodle by a Pune schoolgirl Vaidehi Reddy depicting the cultural and natural richness of Assam was selected to be featured on Google

India homepage on the occasion of Children’s Day in 2104. Even Red Bull provides ample opportunities for passionate doodlers to attain the fame and satisfaction of representing their own countries in Red Bull Doodle Art competitions. One doodler from each region will win a trip to an exciting and new form of art experience, where one international winner will be crowned.

Santanu Kaushik Hazarika from Assam represented India in the Red Bull Doodle Art Championships 2014 and also was crowned victorious later. He’s worked on projects with Harper’s Bazaar, Metropolis Asia, Mojarto and the Ministry of Culture, India, among others after the championships. Subrata Patowary who represented India in the Red Bull Doodle Art 2017 says that he draws inspiration from the darker and bleaker aspect of the society. He first started his professional career in doodling by working for Metropolis 2016. His artwork was used as stage backdrops, banners and

ID cards. After this, he started to get calls from various bang gigs, companies, etc to design for them. Be it posters, cards, stage backdrops, websites designing, the list goes on.

Making a Career

There is no predetermined way to make a career out of doodling. However, there are various institutes of design such as National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, National Institute of Fashion Technology, MAEER’S MIT Institute of Design, Pune, Industrial Design Centre IIT Bombay etc

are some institutes which can sharpen and provide an edge to one’s affinity towards doodling. Various subscription courses are offered online; one such example being Skillshare.com, which also helps in moulding one’s talent.

“However it is a prerequisite for every aspiring doodle artist to have a style of their own which can further be polished. Copying a certain artist will only take you so far,” says Subrata.

He further adds, “Sometimes rather than a degree it’s your own inspiration and imagination that takes the ball to the endgame”. Moreover, in this digital age knowledge of the various software like Doodle.ly, Sketchbook Express, Penultimate, Whiteboard etc becomes quite handy for aspiring doodle artists.

A skilled person can find even the needle in the haystack and such is for the job arena of doodle artists. A doodle artist Alicia Souzadesigns fridge magnets, coasters and notepads in her usual quirky style through her idea of Freelancing. She has a huge fan base on Instagram and gains various sponsors form it as well. Reetuparna Dey provides her artwork for the doodle section of The North-Eastern Chronicle. She also has her own line of merchandise.

In Conclusion

Possibilities are endless, but one needs to spend a lot of time maintaining a good rapport with various party organizers, interior decorators etc and also must keep an eye out for companies who are in search for graphic designers be it for their websites or simple business cards. Again, graphics designing, game designing, tattoo artists, fashion designing, installation artist, wall artist etc are some fields which are related to doodling.
