Former Arunachal Pradesh cabinet minister and Legislative Assembly Speaker Setong Sena breathed his last at a private hospital in Assam’s Dibrugarh district at around 11 pm on January 25 after brief illness. Sena was undergoing treatment at Aditya Hospital in Dibrugarh for the last few days. He was 54 and is survived by wife, one son and two daughters.

Late Setong Sena was born to Lt. Nintu Sena and Wumnai Sena on 7th December 1962 at Nampong in Changlang district. He did his schooling from R K Mission School, Narottam Nagar, Deomali and completed Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Honours) from Shillong.
The people of 51- Nampong Assembly constituency elected him as a Member of Second Legislative Assembly in 1995, he served as a Member of Public Accounts Committee and Committee on Subordinate Legislation. Subsequently, he became the Deputy Speaker of the Second Legislative Assembly on 25th May, 1998. He was re-elected as a Member of Third Legislative Assembly in 1999 and became Minister of State for Public Works Department in October, 1999. He was elected as Speaker of the Third Legislative Assembly on 18-08-2003 and again re-elected as Member of Fourth Legislative Assembly in 2004 and Elected as Speaker of Fourth Legislative Assembly on 26-10-2004. He was again re-elected as Member of Fifth Legislative Assembly in 2009 and inducted in Cabinet Minister for Finance, Lotteries, IPR & Printing, Trade & Commerce and Geology and Mining. Thereafter, he was re-inducted again as Cabinet Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department.

During his long innings in public service and political field from 1995 to 2014, he demonstrated the true spirit of an elected representative by achieving commendable progress in various developmental works in the state and 51- Nampong Assembly Constituency. During his tenure as Minister (Agri/Horti/Animal Husbandry etc.), Late Setong Sena headed a 4 member state delegation to participate in the 2nd North East India-Myanmer Business Conclave with Focus on Border Trade from 26th to31st August 2012.

The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Lt. Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma condoled the sudden demise of former minister and speaker Setong Sena. In his condolence message, the Governor said that in the demise of Sena, the State has lost one of the few great Parliamentarian and adept administrator. Late Sena immensely contributed lots towards the development of the State in various capacities particularly as the Speaker of State Legislative Assembly and Cabinet minister. His strong sense of social commitment for the upliftment of the under-privileged and the down-trodden had touched hearts of people.

Conveying sincere and heartfelt condolence and praying for eternal peace of the departed soul, the Governor said that one of the most respected leaders of Changlang, Tirap and Longding, Late Sena left his mark through his various initiatives, including Pangsau Pass Festival, revival of Stillwell Road and revamping agriculture and allied sectors. People of the State will always cherish his inerasable contributions and his gracious approach, the Governor added.

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has expressed shock and grief over the sudden demise of former Speaker and Minister Setong Sena, who expired Sunday night at a hospital at Dibrugarh. Tuki along with host of ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MLAs and public leaders paid their last respects to the departed leader at Jairampur this morning before the mortal remains were laid to rest.
In a condolence message to the bereaved family members Tuki hailed Late Setong Sena as a leader of the masses who worked tirelessly for upliftment of Changlang District, the Tangsa community in particular and the state of Arunachal Pradesh in general.
“His developmental initiatives for the state in the field of Agriculture and Horticulture and pitching for opening of border trades shall have lasting impression in the minds of every Arunachalee. The tragedy has taken away one of the true sons of the soil,” he said.

Tuki asserted that Late Sena will be remembered forever by the people for his contributions as a Speaker, Minister and a seasoned Legislator. “At this moment of grief, me, my family, colleagues in the Government and people of Arunachal Pradesh extend our solidarity with you and share the pain inflicted on you and your family by this irreparable loss,” Tuki added and prayed the Almighty to bestow the bereaved family members with strength to bear the irreparable loss.

Ministers, MLAs and senior Congress leaders including Tanga Byaling, Nang Sati Mein, Pema Khandu, Kamlung Mossang, PD Sona, Thangwang Wangham, Kalikho Pul, Wangkhi Lowang, P. Khimhun, Padi Richo, Gabrial Wangsu, Zingnu Namchoom, Honchun Ngamdong, Nikh Kamin, Kamthok Lowang, Tesam Pongte, T. Taizu, Tako Dabi attended the last rites.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju expressed profound sadness at the death of Setong Sena. In his condolence message, Rijiju said “Late Sena was an outstanding political figure, who served Arunachal Pradesh with distinction. He was charismatic, eloquent and a consummate master of communication, both in speaking and writing.” In this hour of crisis, I join all the people of Arunachal Pradesh to pray to the Almighty to give the people and members of the bereaved family enough strength and courage to bear the irreparable loss, the message added.

“I’ve lost a close family member,” said lawmaker Kalikho Pul, who was still in mourning after death of his uncle former MP Soben Tayeng. Destiny snatched away a magnanimous leader whose loss will create a political vacuum for times to come, he added.
Former Lok Sabha member MP Takam Sanjoy who shared a room with Sena during college days at Shillong and remained intimate in political life, said “I fall short of words in expressing my deep condolence. This is what life is. We should do our work without thinking for tomorrow, which will remember us by our works.”

The Arunachal has suffered worst ever loss with the death of a disciplined and great visionary leader, a shocked former minister and veteran leader Tako Dabi said while joining the mourners. Many leaders including former minister Naresh Glow also joined in expressing deep shock.

Minister for Food & Civil Supplies Kamlung Mosang expressed deep shock at the untimely demise of former esteemed colleague Setong Sena. He was a gentleman with amiable disposition, Late Sena always worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people, Mosang said.
Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering, Education Minister Tapang Taloh and Ex-Education Minister Bosiram Siram condoled the sudden demise of former minister and speaker Setong Sena. In their condolence messages, they said that the State has lost one of the veteran Congress leaders who had immensely contributed towards the development of the state in various capacities.

In a condolence meeting held at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) termed Late Setong Sena as an active, hard-working and energetic person who served the party with sincerity and dedication. His untimely demise is a great loss to the INC party in particular and the state as a whole, the Party said adding immense contribution of Late Sena for the welfare of the state will always be remembered by the people of the state. The APCC observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

Sena’s sudden and untimely death has created a void and irreparable loss to the State, said Bharatiya Janata Party, Arunachal Pradesh in a condolence message. While recalling his contributions towards the socio-economic development of the State, the Party said Late Sena was one of the most loved and straight forward leaders who immensely contributed towards development of the state. The BJP conveyed deep sense of condolence to the bereaved family.

The rank and file of the Nationalist Congress Party, (NCP) Arunachal Pradesh led by its president Gicho Kabak expressed deep shock at the demise of veteran political figure and former minister Setong Sena. In a condolence meeting, Nima Sangey Saling, Vice-President of State NCP recalled the contribution of Sena for all round development of the state. Two minutes silence was observed as a mark of tribute to the departed soul. All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) deeply mourned the death of former minister Setong Sena. In a condolence message, the AAPSU said Late Sena was an able leader, a true bureaucrat and above all an amiable person. The void created by his untimely demise would not be filled up in the times to come, the union said.
The Tribal Welfare and Development Society, Changlang and the people of Tangsa community expressed deep sadness over the death of former minister Setong Sena, who belongs to Tangsa community. “It is an irreparable loss not only for his family members, close friends and the people of Changlang district but also to the State and its people. He worked tirelessly for uplift of Changlang district and the state as a whole. Late Setong Sena will be remembered forever by the people for his contributions as a minister and a legislator. He was a kind hearted and straight forward person who served the state and the country in different capacities and brought positive changes in agricultural & horticulture sector during his long tenure as Minister.

Sena was not only leader of Nampong assembly constituency but the entire state, said the Galo Students Union (GSU) in a condolence message. With his sudden demise, our state has yet again lost another energetic and visionary leader, the union said.
The Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) and rank and file of various Prayer centers, management Committee convened a condolence meeting yesterday at IFCSAP office premises and deeply mourned the untimely demise of Setong Sena. Late Sena was a prominent visionary leader of Tangsa community in particular and the state as a whole, who led an exemplary, humble, down to earth and simple at heart life. In his demise, a vacuum has been created which shall be difficult to be filled up in the near future.

All officers and staff of the Department of Information and Public Relations today deeply mourned the death of former minister Setong Sena. In a condolence meeting, while recalling late Sena’stenure as the Minister in-charge of the department, DIPR C M Longphong said “ Late Sena was a very inspiring and efficient minister who used to offer valuable ideas and suggestions to the department in various administrative and development issues. It was he who stressed on capacity building of the departmental officers and suggested for specialized training of officers in reputed institutions outside the state.

A two-minute silence was observed to pray for eternal peace of the departed soul and also to give strength to his late Sena’s family members to bear the irreparable loss. Arunachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing and Procession Board, Naharlagun, All India Rajeev Gandhi Vichar Manch International, All Arunachal Pradesh Workers Union also recalled the contribution of Late Setong Sena and deeply mourned his death.
