Entering the realm of higher studies after Class XII may be a difficult time for most students.  Only fresh out of the school room, the plethora of courses available today may indeed appear mind boggling. Although it can be said that most students in India already carve a path for themselves upon choosing their streams in Class XI, but a diversion in this is path is always welcomed.  In fact, courses today range to meet such diverse interests that it has resulted in new jobs in the market. Hence, at this juncture, it is important for students to be aware of their choices so that a well informed decision can be made.

Purpose of this article is to discuss about fresh courses that may be interest the students.


Engineering and Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech):These courses require a firm background in sciences. Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Software engineering, IT heads, the UPSC are some of its prominent scope.  Some common entrance tests are the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The coursesareof four-year duration.

Medicine: Specializations such as General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Dermatology, Orthopedics, Homeopathy etc are popular. Some common entrance exams are the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The course spans for five and a half years, with mandatory internship rotation for a year. AIIMS, Christian Medical College (Vellore), University College of Medical Science & Research Centre (New Delhi), Grant Medical College (Mumbai) are renowned in the field.
Other more unconventional courses such as Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmaceutical studies, Agricultural studies, Architecture, Merchant Navy, Veterinary Science, Naturopathy and Yogic Science, Physiotherapy too are popular courses today and are available in science institutes across the country.


Bachelor of Arts honors degree: These interdisciplinary courses specialize in literature, psychology, society and institutions, state and politics, history, economy etc and spans for a period of three years. The main employers in these fields are multinational companies, financial institutions, politics, international relations, social work/research, NGOs, the United Nations and many more. University of Delhi, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), St. Xavier’s (Mumbai), Christ University, Symbiosis (Pune) are well known institutions in the field.

Fine Arts:Fine arts is considered a discipline of visual art form, however, it can include painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, dance, photography, conceptual art etc. The field manages to attract a lot of students.  Some lucrative careers are working or owning art studios, advertising companies and publishing houses. Most fine arts students are usually self employed, and some with enormous talent receive high commissions.  IIFA, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, Delhi College of Art, Multimedia Institute (Delhi) are well known colleges of the discipline.

Fashion and Designing:  Here, students are introduced to subjects that deal withElements of Textiles, Pattern Making, Fashion Studies, Design Management, Fashion Forecasting etc. The course spans for four years.  Institutes like the National Institute of Design (NID), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Pearl Academyand Raffles Design Institution are some renowned colleges of the discipline.

Mass Communication and Journalism:  A very popular course in today’s age, Mass Communicationand Journalism encompassesbroad fields as radio, graphics, films, television, online media, documentary, events, advertising and corporatecommunications.It is for duration of three years. It has a dynamic careers scope such as Journalism, Public Relations, and Advertising etc.  Colleges where the discipline can be studied include Lady Sri Ram College, Christ University, Symbiosis Centre of Media and Communication, Amity School of Communication, Sophia College for Women, St. Xavier’s College.

Hotel Management:With tourism expanding in the global market, this course is rich in scope. It trains students to take on managerial responsibilities in hotels. Guest Service Management, Housekeeping Management , Kitchen Management, Communication Fundamentals, Hotel Engineering etc are some of the subjects taught under this course.The duration of the course is three years. Some fine institutions of this field are Christ University, Institute of Hotel Management (Mumbai), Institute of Hotel Management (Ahmedabad), Amity University.

Social Work: Social work is considered a rewarding career on a personal level. Specialization is available in Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, and Economics.  Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Jamia Millia Islamia, and Loyola College of Social Sciences are all known for the field.

Graphic Design: This field essentially involves the production of visual solutions to communication problems. Some of the subjects taught under this course are Contextual Photography, Infographics, Design Ethnography, Basic Typography, Printing & Production Methods etc. It spans for period of three to four years.

Law: Integrated courses such as B.A. L.L.B., B.B.A. L.L.B, and B.S. L.L.B. are available nowadays. The course is a length of five years. Litigation, Indian Legal Service, Legal Journalisms, Law Firms, Teaching and Writing are open to the field.  National Law University, Jindal Global Law School, Christ University, Symbiosis Law School (Pune) are some renowned colleges.


Bachelor of Commerce: This includes subjects as Business Law, Business Statistics, Micro and Macro Economics. Institutions such as University of Delhi, University of Mumbai, Symbiosis (Pune), St. Joseph (Bangalore), and Mount Carmel (Bangalore) are renowned in the field. The duration of the course is of three years. The scope for such isChartered Accounting, Banking, Stock Broking, Agricultural Economists, Business Consultants, Investment Banking, Budget Analyst, UPSC etc.

Bachelor of Business Administration:  It introduces subjects like Business Mathematics, Financial Accounting, Information and Technology etc.  The course is a length of three years.

Bachelor of Management and Business Studies:This three year course is offered in AIIMS Institute, IIT (Delhi), Amity University, Narsee Monjee College of Management Studies.
