Sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) wing of the Assam Police today arrested Dr Manoj Kumar Baishya, Assistant Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), after he was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe.

Dr Baishya had allegedly demanded Rs 8,000 from Haren Kumar for issuing a post-mortem report of his elder brother Rameswar Prasad Shah, who had expired at the GMCH recently.

The accused, according to Kumar, had initially demanded Rs 50,000 but later agreed to issue the autopsy report only if Rs 12,000 was paid to him.

“They had even paid the doctor Rs 4,000, but unable to pay the remaining amount, the family contacted the law enforcers and accordingly a trap was laid,” an official statement said. The money was also seized by the sleuths along with the certified copy of post-mortem report. A case ( 13/2019) has been registered under section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The accused will be produced before the Court on October 23.
