In one of the biggest gold seizure in the region, smuggled gold worth nearly Rs 8 crore was recovered by sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The gold bars weighed over 18 kilograms.

Acting on a tip-off, the DRI recovered gold bars from inside a car travelling towards Guwahati and arrested two persons, including the driver of the vehicle, in connection with the case. The gold bars were reportedly sourced from Myanmar through an international gold smuggling racket.

However, the exact location where the consignment was first intercepted is not known.

“Later this evening, the vehicle was taken to a workshop in Guwahati where it was found that two additional gold bars were concealed in the chassis of the vehicle,” sources said.

In another simultaneous seizure, the CISF detained a person at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here for hiding smuggled gold bars in his rectum, which was later taken out and handed out to the Customs. According to Customs department, the seized gold weighed 700 gm, the value of which is estimated around Rs 27 lakh.

The rectum carrier, according to official sources, was spotted during routine body screening of the passengers at the airport. The accused was about to board his flight from Guwahati to New Delhi.
