The Government Arts College at Mangshila in North Sikkim District was inaugurated by Sikkim HRDD Minister R.B Subba in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Hissey Lachungpa, Deputy Speaker Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, Forests Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, Kabi MLA Ugen Nidup Bhutia, Adhakshya North Chairman SNT and other dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Hissey Lachungpa congratulated the public and Panchayats on the historic occasion and urged the students of the district to take full benefit. He also requested the HRDD department to taken up construction of the college building on a war footing so that the students can enjoy all the facilities.

Tshering Wangdi Lepcha said that the college will important not only for the GPU but for the entire North district. He urged the students to fully utilize the facilities and advised them to work hard for a secure and bright future.

The Deputy Speaker and the area MLA stated that in the near future Mangshila will turn into an educational hub of the district and congratulated the public of the GPU on the opening of the college. He thanked the HRDD department for opening the first college and also urged the department to complete the polytechnic college also.

R.B Subba said that history has been created today for North District. He also said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, it is a priority to make the education sector vibrant and affordable for the poorest of the poor. With the coming of the college at Mangshila people from the district will now be able to pursue their education in the District. He stated that the college will be running temporarily from a rented premise for the initial years and the department will immediately start the process of construction of the new college in the acquired land. Once the new college is built students will have access to all the facilities and his department plans to complete the construction work as soon as possible. He also stated that the college will offer degree courses in languages such as Limboo, Bhutia and Lepcha as per the demands of the public.

While advising the students he said that today the world is a highly competitive where there is cut throat competition in every stream. The opportunities of employment in government sector are low and students should focus and explore other avenues as well. He said that youths of Sikkim have started to excel in sports and about ten people from the state are currently playing in the Indian Soccer League. He also stated Sikkim has produced many sportsperson who are doing well in sports such as taekwondo, boxing and other sports. The youths of Sikkim should be ambitious and choose the stream as per their strengths.

The Minister also stated that improving the quality of education in the State is high in the agenda of the government. The State Education department has been successful in bringing Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in order to motivate the students to innovate and develop interest in science and latest fields like robotics. He stated that world is moving towards a knowledge economy and the students should be aware of the changes in the world. The HRDD department has already finished posting the principal and headmasters in all schools and the process of posting of science teachers in all schools is near compete.

On the occasion, the Panchayat and Public of Mangshila GPU also felicitated the HRDD Minister and Deputy Speaker for setting up the college at Mangshila.

The Mangshila Arts College is first Degree College currently offering courses in three streams and about seventy students are currently enrolled. The college is functioning as an extension of Burtuk Degree College and affiliated to Sikkim University. Mangshila is about half an hour journey from Mangan and is under Dzongu constituency.
