The Garo Students Union (GSU), Mindikgre regional unit, on Thursday sought a judicial probe on the allegations of misappropriation of funds meant for the restoration of the Nokpante (Garo bachelor dormitory) at Asakgre village, near Chokpot in South Garo Hills.

The students body blamed the contractor, who was given the project for restoration of the Nokpante, aimed at promoting tourism. They alleged that 85 percent of the funds were withdrawn of the total Rs. 10 lakh sanctioned.

In a complaint to Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills Shella N. Marak, the GSU sought a probe into the fund misuse.

“We filed a complaint with the DC asking for an inquiry as 85 percent of the funds have been withdrawn and literally no construction, barring a few posts. This comes after local villagers complained to us over the non completion,” said Greneth M. Sangma, GSU president Mindikgre Unit.

The GSU has also sought stern action against the contractor Kelson Ch. Marak.

“Withdrawing the money without proper work falls under scam and as such action needs to be taken against the contractor if he is found guilty. The money was withdrawn in November 2015”, the GSU added.
