International Day of Yoga Preparations Underway in Sikkim

A coordination meeting to take stock of preparation for the State level celebration of upcoming 3rd International Day of Yoga in Sikkim was held at the Conference Hall of HRDD on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary cum Principal Secretary HRDD G.P. Upadhyay, in the presence of Secretary Health Dr. K. Bhandari, Secretary Sports & Youth Affairs S.D. Dhakal, senior officers of line Departments of the Government of Sikkim, SP East, and Officers from ITBP, NCC and SSB.

Secretary Health Department Dr. K. Bhandari briefed about the past two editions of the event, and also gave details about the programme for the upcoming State level celebration of International Day of Yoga to be held at Palzor Stadium Gangtok on 21st June. He informed that the Common Yoga Protocol received from the Ministry of AYUSH Government of India would be followed.

It was informed in the meeting that the Governor of Sikkim will attend the function as the Chief Guest and the Chief Minister will be Guest of Honour. The Yoga Protocol will start at 7 am sharp and over 2600 participants comprising school students, NCC, NSS, ITBP, SSB and other organisations would be participating in the event, it was informed.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Chief Secretary cum Principal Secretary HRDD G.P. Upadhyay called for coordinated action from all concerned departments to make the event a grand success. He took detailed stock of department wise roles and responsibilities and directed the officers from the line departments to put their best foot forward to ensure success of the programme. He informed that IDOY will be celebrated in all the other districts simultaneously, for which directives have already been sent to the concerned District Collectors.

Upadhyay also informed that a special addition to this year’s programme would be a five-minute Yoga Demonstration by 16 students of Ramidham Primary School West Sikkim, who will be escorted by Headmistress of the School Ms Bindhya Subba, also their yoga trainer. These students will also demonstrate the Yoga Postures as per the Common Yoga Protocol, he informed.

The meeting was also addressed by Director, Primary Education HRDD Bhim Thatal. It was decided in the meeting that the rehearsal for the event would be held on the 18th of June at Palzor Stadium Gangtok. The meeting concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Gagan Ruchal from AYUSH wing, Department of Health.
