Atletico de Kolkata left Chennaiyin FC in dire straits with a 2-1 victory in their Hero Indian Super League clash in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Chennaiyin FC seemed to be on the right track when Raphael Augusto (27th minute) capitalised on a defensive lapse to give the visitors the lead but Atletico de Kolkata equalized with a goal at the stroke of half time through Sameehg Doutie and then the match winner by Iain Hume (63rd minute).

The win left Atletico de Kolkata with 17 points from 11 matches and helped the defending champions jump to the second spot behind leaders FC Goa (18 points). Chennaiyin FC are at the bottom of the table with 10 points from 10 matches.

It was an error from the Atletico de Kolkata defence that allowed Chennaiyin FC to surge ahead in the 27th minute. Raphael played a nice one-two with Fikru and defender Augustine mistimed his clearance allowing Raphael to make a run, avoid another tackle from Arnab Mondal and then slot the ball past goalkeeper Amrinder Singh.

Fikru had a chance to kill the game in the 41st minute but his attempted lob over the goalkeeper was poor and landed straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. That miss proved suicidal as the hosts came back strongly.

Atletico de Kolkata took some time to settle down and it was not until the half hour mark that they found their feet. Doutie was dangerous and created some smart moves, helping his team secure the equaliser in the second minute of added time in the first half. A free-kick from Borja Fernandez was punched away by Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Karanjit Singh but only as far as Doutie who drilled in a low volley past a maze of players.

The goal was just the tonic that Atletico de Kolkata needed to push forward in the second session and they ended up taking the lead in the 63rd minute. Once again it was Doutie who was in the thick of action as he did well to cross from the right flank and Hume was at his best with a fine run and an equally good sliding finish at the near post.

Hume tried to increase the lead in the 73rd minute when a back pass from Lalhmangaihsanga Ralte seemed suicidal but despite a fine run from the Canadian striker, Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Karanjit did well to avert the danger with a run of his own.

That miss did not come back to haunt Atletico de Kolkata as they defended stoutly for the rest of the match to get their campaign back on track while pushing Chennaiyin FC further towards the exit.
