Janta Mela 2017 Concludes in Sikkim

The Gram Swaraj Abhiyan for 2017 popularly known as Janta Mela which took off from Rhenok East District on 4th June concluded on Friday at Mangan.

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling along with his Cabinet Ministers, Chairpersons, Advisors, Secretaries of various Departments toured all the four districts bringing welfare benefits to the doorstep of the common man people.

Addressing the colossal gathering of public from the three constituencies of North District at Mangan Public Ground, Pawan Chamling stated that the objectives of the landmark Janta Mela which besides reaching basic welfare needs to the people, was to access how far the development goals of the Government have been achieved, understand the problems and development issues of the citizens and also to inform and make aware the citizens about the policies and schemes of the government so that they can assert their rights. He said that the Rs 700 crores worth of development schemes goes straight to the people through this Janta Mela.

The Chief Minister handed down tokens for more than 50 different welfare schemes to the beneficiaries of North District. The schemes distributed under RMDD were house upgradation, GCI Sheets for House Construction, LPG sets and pressure cookers. Under Animal Husbandry Department, the distribution of milch cows, piggery development scheme, backyard poultry and trout farming was distributed.

The cheques under State Livelihood Mission was also distributed and from the Social Welfare Department tokens of old age pensions, Proud Mother Scheme, Samajik Sewa Bhattas to local faith healers like Bongthings was distributed. Homestay tourism scheme was also handed down to beneficiaries apart from work orders for vermin compost, rural compost and power tillers for Agriculture Development, fabricated tanks ,land bank scheme and exgratia of Rs 10000/,purchase of social assets to JFMCs under Forest Department was also distributed.

Under Beti Bacho Beti Padhao the Chief Minister handed down Baby Box to mothers of new born daughters which contained all essential items for the baby and mother.The proud mother scheme is the brain child of the Honourable Chief Minister to address the declining population of Skkim under which all the mothers of second baby are given Rs 5000 and for the third baby a sum of Rs10000 is provided.

Under the Swatch Bharat Mission, Mangan Nagar Panchayat has become the first ULB in the State to be declared Open Defecation Free and on this occasion the ODF certificate was presented to the Nagar Panchayat President. NHPC Stage power Project under CSR initiative also presented a cheque of Rupees Twenty lakhs for procurement of ultrasound machine for the district hospital.

The Chief Minister said that one of the major achievements of his government was to provide all the household with toilets due to which Sikkim has been declared as the first Open Defecation Free State in the Country. He also stated that the state has earned the accolade of being the First Organic State and it was the vision of his government to be Kutcha House free by 2018. The government has also endeavored to make Sikkim Poverty free by the year 2018-19.

During the program, he also announced that unmarried women of 45 yrs and above will be given pension of Rs 2000 for their sustenance. The physically challenged persons will get Rs.1500 per month and from next year onwards farmers will be provided a pension of Rs 1000. He said that people should convert the benefits received during the Mela into income generating assets and all the Sikkimese people should work towards becoming self reliant and self sufficient. He said that Sikkimese people should be able to tap the organic brand name of Sikkim and make use of the opportunity and the advantage in marketing organic products. Though many multinational Companies have expressed their willingness to invest in Sikkim he stated that he wanted Sikkimese people to reap the benefits. People should endeavor to achieve maximum production of organic products and undertake marketing activities also.

He also declared that Yumesamdong, Lachen and Lachung will be known as the kingdom of Rhododendrons and it should be protected and marketed throughout the world. He also talked on focusing on Sustainable Development and saving the environment for future generations.

During the Janta Mela at Mangan, he also made several announcements like Rural Marketing Center at Phidang, Gnon Samdong and Mangshilla. A Parking Plaza will be created at Lachen and Lachung. The Chief Ministers also announced that riverfront beautification of Chungthang bazaar will be undertaken. An organic vegetable center will be developed at Rangrang and Solid Waste Management project will be developed at Ringdang. A new Girls School at Mangan will start from the next session and the reconstruction of new 50 bedded hospitals will be undertaken at Mangan. He said that all these work should be qualitative and the officials and public of North Sikkim should be vigilant. A sense of ownership, accountability and responsibility should be developed among all the stakeholders. He dwelled on the idea of “Afno Goan Afai Banow ani Ramro Banow”. He also said that that the money for Construction of Monastery at Gurudongmar has also been sanctioned.

The Chief Minister also said that that Sikkim has achieved unparalled developmental milestones. He stated that Sikkim has stood a silent spectator and suffered shortages and incurred a loss of more than Rs 6000 crores due to the agitation in neighboring State and blockades during the past 32 years. He urged all Sikkimese people to stand united and maintain the peace, harmony and brotherhood. He motivated that North Sikkim should be made into an exemplary District and each one should contribute and work hand in hand with the government which is pro people and pro developmental.
