A 28-year-old man became the first reported case of death from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) this year in the Garo Hills region.

The man died yesterday at his home in Edenbari on the outskirts of Tura in West Garo Hills.

The victim, Jobath Sangma, was being treated at the Tura Christian Hospital but was discharged on the request of his family and reportedly passed away today.

Sangma was admitted to hospital on July 19. The hospital diagnosis report said: “Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) JE Serology Positive”.

The death comes barely two months after a suspected outbreak of JE in the Garo Hills region with over a dozen cases was reported. The highest number of suspected JE cases was reported from in and around Tura. However, the fears of an outbreak were dismissed by a Central team.
