The District Agriculture Office, Kohima, Department of Agriculture conducted training-cum-demonstration on management of Fall Army worm (FAW) at Sakhabama village on May 11. The training was organized by DAO Kohima on learning the severity of infestation of Fall Army worm where the Farmers Friend gave the information on May 8 and an inspection was done May 9. 

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) team comprising Joint Director, Bendanglila, Deputy Director, L. Nungsang Jamir and Agriculture Officer, M. Yanger Ao from the Directorate, Department of Agriculture. The programme was chaired by Akuno Zao, Agriculture Officer, DAO Kohima followed by technical session taken by Joint Director, Bendanglila, where she shared about the history and occurrence of the pest internationally, Nationally and when it spread to North east region and ultimately in Nagaland. 

She also explained about the life cycle of Fall Army worm and how the pests infest the crops, its severity and management techniques. She also encourage the farmers to take keen concern in management of the new pest which is occurring in severe form, also remind the farmers of their duty to check the pest and report immediately to the authorities for efficient and timely management.

Demonstration on usage of organic and chemical insecticides (when mechanical and organic management is not an option) was given by District Agriculture Officer, Bodevi Shuya and Joint Director, Bendanglila. The farmers were apprised about the formulation, quantity for making solution, application intervals, and its impact on insects and precaution on the usage of chemicals. Practical demonstration was conducted in the farmers field and organic and chemical insecticides, insecticide spraying kits were distributed to the farmers and advice them to use carefully and efficiently.

The Village Council Chairman, Viyol Thuphrie and Farmers Friend, Keduozo Kezo gave a short speeches thanking the Department for taking sincere approach for the management of the noxious pest at the earliest which have being a threat for the farmers in the area. The Joint Director, Bendanglila declared and taken the village as the sample village for the management of the pest and for future research. The training was conducted successfully and the farmers assured their full corporation in managing the pest with the help of the Department. This was informed from a press release issued by Mhalevilie Thorie, Agriculture Inspector, District Agriculture Office, Kohima, Nagaland.
