As many as two police personnel sustained injuries along with a couple of anti-CAA protesters at Belonia on Thursday, when unidentified miscreants hurled stones and brickbats at a rally of Left front. Both the police personnel were immediately taken to the local hospital.

The Left Front, an amalgamation of five Left political outfits called a protest throughout state against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which they call an “anti-constitutional attempt” of the ruling party. The slew of agitation included rallies, street corners and gatherings. Most of the protest rallies were peaceful apart from Belonia located in the South Tripura district where miscreants — allegedly BJP supporters, purportedly pelted brickbats in order to impede the protesters.

Speaking at the central protest programme followed by a rally at Agartala, state Left Front convener Bijan Dhar said, the attack on Left supporters and frontal organisation activists came as they tried to agitate against an ‘unconstitutional law’.

Protest marches were also organized by the Left Front at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, Kailashahar in Unakoti district and Belonia at South Tripura. Left Front convener Bijan Dhar, while addressing the gathering, has accused ruling BJP of playing politics of violence.

“Our rally at Belonia was attacked by BJP supporters. They pelted stones at us. Many people were injured including the policemen,” Dhar said.

According to police sources, women Sub-Inspectors Champa Das and Smriti Kanta Bardhan were injured during the attacks. Das received head injuries and was referred to GBP Hospital at Agartala following the seriousness of her health condition.

South Tripura Additional Superintendent of Police Ranadhir Debbarma said that the issue was being investigated by a team of officers and nobody would be spared.

Speaking at the rally at Agartala, CPI (M) state secretary Goutam Das urged for abolition of CAA in no time and said, “They (BJP) have passed this Law forcefully due to their absolute majority in the house, despite the fact that the people of the country especially in the North East kept protesting against this anti-Constitutional law.” He also claimed that the BJP had proved their parochial politics through this act. .
